Susan Shin of NEDAP, an advocacy group that promotes financial fairness, warns about debt settlement.
Debt settlement companies like credit repair companies are scams. Debt settlement companies promise they’ll get you out of debt by negotiating discounted settlements with your creditors. Credit repair companies promise that they are going to improve your credit but they often charge you hefty fees to do that. Instead of paying these scam companies, you’ll be much better off if you work with creditors directly, make credit disputes on your own, work with non-profit consumer counseling services or other free financial counseling services.
Susan is a staff attorney at NEDAP and as the coordinator of the Consumer Legal Services Clinic she works with community groups throughout New York City. She is committed to protecting consumers and providing them with information and advice to help protect them against unscrupulous companies and individuals. Before joining NEDAP, she was a fellow in the prestigious program funded by the Skadden,Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom law firm.
